NAPA VALLEY WINE AUCTION DONATES $92,547 TO THE NAPA VALLEY SHELTER PROJECT
Funds will be used to renovate and operate the new Hope Resource Center
12/20/2000 - The Napa Valley Vintners (NVV) has approved a $92,547 grant to the Napa County Council for Economic Opportunity's (NCCEO) Shelter Project to assist the local homeless population.
Thanks to proceeds raised by the 20th annual Napa Valley Wine Auction held here last June, the grant will help fund the Hope Resource Center - a new shelter project managed by the NCCEO. Once renovated, the Center will operate out of the First Methodist Church's former Centennial Hall in downtown Napa.
"We very much value and appreciate the commitment of the NVV to our community," said Carmen Garcia, executive director of NCCEO. "Their contribution through wine auction donations will help tremendously in supporting the needs of Napa's most vulnerable - the homeless," Garcia added.
Additional funds for the Hope Resource Center were provided by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and Napa County. However, without the Napa Valley Wine Auction grant for the Center's renovation and operation, the HUD funds would have been withdrawn.
The Hope Resource Center is designed to serve a portion of the homeless population that has previously gone underserved - individuals who are unable or unwilling to follow strict guidelines including seeking work and housing along with substance abuse treatment and mental health counseling. Rather, the resource center will provide a place to take showers, wash clothing and make services approachable to those with little trust. Health service partners will include the Napa County Health and Human Services, Clinic Ole, Progress Foundation and the Napa Valley AIDS Project, among others.
This year alone, The Napa Valley Vintners (NVV) contributed an unprecedented $8.7 million toward the betterment of the Napa Valley community. For the first time, a special projects fund of $910,000 was set aside for unanticipated community needs that might arise before next year's Wine Auction distribution of funds. The NCCEO grant for the Hope Resource Center was taken specifically from this fund.
The Napa Valley Wine Auction is a registered nonprofit, established in 1981 by the NVV to raise private contributions for Napa County charitable organizations and residents in need. Since its inception, the Wine Auction has raised more than $29 million for local Napa charities.
