NAPA VALLEY WINE AUCTION TO DONATE $155,000 TO RED CROSS FOR LOCAL EARTHQUAKE RELIEF

10/6/2000 - The Napa Valley Wine Auction's Health Care Fund today donated $155,000 to the Silverado-Napa County Chapter of the American Red Cross to assist in earthquake relief efforts. The Health Care Fund is a long-term endowment established and funded by contributions made by the Napa Valley Wine Auction, sponsored by the Napa Valley Vintners (NVV).

The Wine Auction's donation is specifically earmarked for health-related needs, including crisis and mental health counseling, as well as emergency services for the uninsured and others who were injured as a result of the quake. The Red Cross will have six months to distribute the funds according to the health-related guidelines established by the Health Care Fund.

"Having seen first hand the devastation that occurred in the recent Napa earthquake, I share the heartfelt thanks from the many Napa County citizens that will benefit from these dollars," said Bob Little, chairman of the board of the Silverado-Napa County Chapter of the American Red Cross. "Once again, as in all times of crisis, the Napa Valley Wine Auction came through to support the people of Napa," Little added.

Thus far, the Red Cross has received $21,000 in earthquake related donations to date -- $10,000 from the Bank of America and $11,000 in private contributions. The Wine Auction's donation brings the total amount committed to $176,000.

The Red Cross will work with the Napa County Health and Human Services to disburse the funds to appropriate local nonprofit organizations that offer health-related services to earthquake victims. A portion of the total will also be allocated to the Red Cross' own health-related services provided as a result of the quake.

Napa County nonprofits are reporting a number of ongoing challenges related to September's earthquake. Some families require short-term housing while repairs are being made to their homes, while numerous individuals need mental health and crisis counseling resulting from the financial and emotional aftermath of the trembler.

The Napa Valley Wine Auction is a registered nonprofit, established in 1981 by the NVV to raise private contributions for Napa County charitable organizations and residents in need. Since its inception, the Wine Auction has raised more than $29 million for local Napa charities.
