Lot description:
This Merlot based wine showcases the three vineyards that comprise the blend. The Hardman Avenue vineyard is an amazing site for Merlot; rolling bench land with a little clay to make the Merlot vines happy. The 57% Merlot in the blend is the foundation of the palette; cherry and black olive aromas; silky tannins, viscous, oily mouth feel leading to a long finish. 40% Cabernet Sauvignon from the Krueser and Monticello vineyards add structure and classic Cabernet aromas (black currant and licorice). 2% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petite Verdot add complexity and further delineate the terroir of these vineyards. South eastern Napa is up and coming!

With just 250 cases produced each year from a five-acre vineyard located in the rocky eastern hillsides above the Silverado Trail, the challenge is to narrow the criteria even further to produce a 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon of unique distinction for Premiere Napa Valley. Anselmo Vigne’s Block 1 which was planted in 1988 to Clone 7 on St. George rootstock, yields a Cabernet Sauvignon of singular grace and power which is normally blended with the other blocks of this vineyard. In the hands of our winemaker, Craig MacLean, the naturally structured, concentrated and ripe mountain fruit is restrained and refined.

Lot description:
Our 2005 Cabernet Franc grapes were harvested from our hillside vineyard on Atlas Peak, 1,350 feet above the valley floor, on October 20. The vineyard yielded 2.6 tons per acre. The grape clusters were destemmed, and approximately 60% were whole berries going into the fermentation tank. They were then cold-soaked for 72 hours, followed by an extended fermentation for 27 days, giving an extended juice-to-skin contact, the result of which is a dark purple, almost black color, which announces this wine’s intensity. The wine has been aged thus far in a combination of French Nevers (60%) and Hungarian (40%) oak. It is blended with 3% Merlot and 3% Cabernet Sauvignon. The bouquet is that of black cherry, which follows through on the palate with a hint of nutmeg and cinnamon. There is also a lush, rich mouthfeel that lends an elegance to the wine.

The 2005 Granite Hill Cabernet is from our Foss Valley Vineyard located at 1,800 ft. above the Napa Valley floor, in the Atlas Peak AVA. The soil is decomposed granite over solid granite blocks. This rocky soil naturally limits the vine vigor, producing smaller berries and outstanding concentration in the fruit. Cool fog rolls off the hills each morning during the summer. The vineyard is also cooler during heat spells due to breezes at this elevation. However the sun shines on our vines for a longer number of hours each day. This combination of cool nights and lengthy warm days allows for greater complexity and optimal hang time. The wines from this vineyard have amazed us with their rich fruit and concentration. This exclusive lot of Granite Hill Cabernet is the best wine produced from this still-developing vineyard. Lush and concentrated, we expect this wine to mature to one of the best Cabernets produced from classic, mountain-grown Napa Valley fruit. Intense blackberry and cassis flavors finish in silky, not coarse, tannins. The structure is ample enough for 15 to 20 years of aging.

This 100% Cabernet Sauvignon is a unique blend of our finest lots from Castle Peak Ranch. Astrale e Terra's vineyard sits in a bowl with south, east and west-facing slopes, radically diverse soil depth and elevations between 1,250 and 1,360 feet. We harvest 17 acres of Cab in multiple, separate lots to capture the distinctive character of each row according to soil, elevation and age of the vine.
