We're proud to be the custodians of some of oldest Cabernet Sauvignon vines in Napa Valley: a block in Yountville of the Inglenook clone that had been planted on St. George rootstock in 1959. In 2003, they suffered from red leaf virus and, wanting to preserve these ancient vines, we switched to organic and biodynamic farming and they immediately responded. The vines' new health allowed the grapes to reach full physiological ripeness, resulting in richer fruit flavors in the wine. For this unique blend, we added Petit Verdot from the same vineyard.

Pick Up Sticks has been my house wine that I've made for the past 10 years and is a field blend of five Mediterranean varieties grown here at Hudson Vineyards in Napa Carneros. The focus has been to create a rich, full-bodied, aromatic red wine that you can't stop drinking. It has evolved over the years from a simple blend of Syrah and Viognier to today a complex blend of 33% Grenache, 45% Syrah, 3% Viognier, 16% Petit Syrah and 3% Barbera. It's explosive.

The final chapter in a series that began at Premiere Napa Valley 2004. We call this series Anthology, a Greek word referring to a collection of literary works. Each year, we featured a distinctive lot from one of the Bordeaux varieties that comprise the blend for our flagship wine, Anthology. This year, we blend vineyards and varieties featured in previous years to create a beautiful compilation from the 2006 vintage: Merlot from Stagecoach Vineyard for black cherry flavors and supple, rich texture; Malbec from Herrick Ranch for juicy red fruit and unctuous warm berry pie character; Cabernet Franc from Carpenter Vineyard for spicy notes and firm structure; and Petit Verdot from Tall Trees Vineyards for rich black fruit and mocha. To this, we add Cabernet Sauvignon from Spring Mountain Vineyards for a touch of dark chocolate, sage and mint. A masculine, richly textured wine bursting with bold flavors.

PADRONE, named in memory of my father, comes from hand-selected fruit from our extremely rocky hillside estate vineyard with yields of a mere one-and-a-half tons per acre. This Cabernet has resulted in flavors of great concentration and complexity and will drink well in the near-term due to its rich, ripe fruit. You may also wish to lay it down over the next 20 years. Clone 29, a Napa Valley heritage clone, is the foundation for all Rubicon vintages. These vines were selected in France by Gustave Niebaum around 1883 and shipped to Rutherford, where they became some of the first Cabernet Sauvignon vines to be planted in Napa Valley. Continuously propagated on the estate since that time, U.C. Davis has certified the Niebaum clone as heritage clone #29. This individual lot of 100% Cabernet is a pure selection from one of our best and oldest clone #29 Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards.

Now, 20 years later, they have put their heads together to create a masterful blend of marvelous Merlot and fantastic Franc. Reputation has it that sometimes their collective judgment could be considered "dubious" so the talents of Pahlmeyer winemaker Erin Green have been enlisted to bring these two together.

This 100% Cabernet Franc from Carpenter vineyard completed fermentation in ten days with 45% of the grapes punch cap fermented in one ton open tanks and 55% in stainless steel vessels. The aging process has taken place exclusively in new Mercier Bordeaux barrels. Broad and intense aromas of bay leaf, clove and black berry fruit reveal intimations of what to anticipate from this single-vineyard wine. The opulent structure with characteristics of black cherry, pomegranate, currant and clove have consistently marked this Cabernet Franc since first made in 1989. Consistent to past vintages are the pronounced flavors of mulling spices, cured meats and dark chocolate. Complimented by refined tannins, the expansive finish displays caramelized fruit, orange peel and clove.

Winemaker Karen Culler created a one-of-a-kind Cabernet Sauvignon blend with our Mount Veeder Tambor Vineyard and exclusive Stags Leap District Cabernet Sauvignon. This exemplary offering blends two complementary appellations within the Napa Valley. This wine is approachable and elegant, not overly powerful, yet will last for years. The Tambor Vineyard produces fruit that is very dense and dark, coming off a steep hillside vineyard with a southern-facing slope at an elevation of 400 feet. This vineyard receives cool breezes coming off the bay in the evening, while enjoying the site's sun exposure and warmth during the day. The Stags Leap District vines, grown on a slope called the River Block in a well-drained, dry-farmed area, are noted for dark berry flavors, great mouthfeel and tannin balance. This is especially fresh with good acidity, velvety and rich.

Our 2007 Luna Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon is composed of grapes from the sunlit slopes of Howell Mountain. The grapes were picked in late September, sorted pre- and post-destemming and fermented with native yeasts. After three weeks of maceration, the free-run wine is being aged in 100% new French oak. The wine has a deep blackberry color with aromas of blueberries and anise. The bright fruit flavors complement dusty tannins on the finish. This never-before-released wine represents the best of the Napa Valley's mountainside vineyards.

This blend is from three different blocks in our Backus Vineyard in the eastern hills of Oakville. The main component is from the North Block planted in 1999, and the balance is from the South Block planted in 1975. This blend was created in February 2008 in a Taransaud V barrel and will continue to age in this barrel until bottling in 2010. The Taransaud V barrel is created from an ultra selection of oak from the Troncais Forest, aged five years, and is one of only a handful of these particular barrels crafted by Taransaud at their cooperage in Cognac. Expressive aromatics of dark fruits, graphite and cassis combined with a focused palate lends to the concentrated mineral characteristics and the balanced tannin structure of this wine. We are proud to offer this lot, which is a perfect expression of Oakville's terroir.

In 2007, Block A was thinned to one cluster per shoot, which further enhanced the depth of fruit, balance and elegance of this wine. The power and elegance of Krupp Brothers' Atlas Peak Syrah is tamed with the seductively aromatic Carpy Ranch Rutherford Viognier. There is a first for everything, and this blend is a testament that experiments can be successful! The Freemark Abbey winemaking team sourced the Syrah from one of Krupp Brothers' best Syrah blocks at 1500' elevation. It was double sorted, cold soaked for five days before inoculation and given an extended maceration for 30 days. The Viognier was fermented in stainless steel at 50*F for 30 days. 95% Syrah, 5% Viognier. A toast to Côte-Rôtie!
