ロバート・モンダヴィに捧げる

On May 16, we lost an extraordinary leader in the world of wine, legendary American vintner Robert Mondavi.

One of the many important lessons Mr. Mondavi taught us was to always be there to help a neighbor, a friend, our community or beyond. He was one of the most kind and generous people we’ve ever known. One of the original founders of both the Napa Valley Vintners non-profit trade organization in 1944 and its community fundraiser, Auction Napa Valley, in 1981, Mr. Mondavi set the standard by which all Napa Valley vintners strive to operate: making wines that are among the best in the world and using their resultant status to raise money to support charitable causes.

We are all beneficiaries of Robert Mondavi’s vision, his generosity, his warmth of spirit and his joy for life, and in tribute, we invite wine lovers from anywhere in the world to share a remembrance of the man and his accomplishments as a vintner, a Napa Valley ambassador, a supporter of his community, a patron of the arts and a friend to many.

I came to stay with my best friend, who lives in San Francisco and we took a day trip to the Napa Valley. My friend had picked out 4 or 5 wineries that she had tried and loved for me to enjoy too. One of them was Robert Mondavi's; we had a fabulous time and I am saddened to hear of his death. However, his enthusiasm for his produce was obvious from the staff that work there and it contributed to a memorable time for me on my trip. That alone assures me that his work will continue to lead the way in the world of wine. I hope to make a return visit to the Napa Valley in the next year and will definitely include a return visit to the Mondavi winery. My condolences and warm regards go out to his family and all staff who work for him. God bless. X

After visiting many wineries in Napa Valley and visiting Copia, I finally had the chance to visit Robert Mondavi Winery this past Wednesday (July 23,2008) I have always had so much respect for the Mondavi family for what they have done for California Wine. I will always hold Robert Mondavi as the "Father" of California Wine. I am so grateful for his many accomplishments!

I came into the wineries to facilitate teamwork and process streamlining just about the time that Robert stepped down from line management and took his place on the Board. His incredible leadership was legendary among his staff throughout the company. Personal stories of his greatness, vision, kindness, and generosity abounded everywhere.

So intense was the love and loyalty for him, it would be difficult for anyone to ever effectively step into his shoes in the eyes of his staff. His presence when he came through for lunch or a meeting was absolutely the high point of everyone's day. His very presence created the atmosphere of "family" throughout the winery, as well as the corporate conscience for excellence and elegance.

While he will be sadly missed by everyone, he is also the kind of personality that never really leaves our souls. The quality of who he was is alive and well on a daily basis in the hearts and memories of all who knew him. I count myself blessed to have been able know him to share in his incredible American dream.

Warmest condolences to his family and friends.

We had the great pleasure of visiting the winery you created for the first time this year. Through the atmosphere and employees we could feel and understand the passion and fulfillment that was put into your creation. I hope this never changes and that your legacy lives on.

Well Done!

When I was 35 I was undecided what to do with my life. I wanted to go back to school, but thought I might be too old to start over. I read "Harvests of Joy" and immediately realized what a silly notion that was. If Bob Mondavi could start a over with a new winery at 55, I could certainly obtain my much smaller goals.

My husband knew how much I admired Robert Mondavi and through his job as a grocery manager arranged a wine tour and lunch at the Mondavi winery.
During our lunch, Robert and Margrit walked in and sat at their table. Even though I was nervous, I was resolved to tell him how much he inspired me to reach my goal of completing my education. I walked up to him and he was so kind and told me to never give up, that I could do anything I set my mind to achieving. He posed for pictures and signed my Harvest of Joy book that I had brought along for the occasion.

I am proud to say that because of Bob Mondavi's inspiration, I graduated from law school last year and have realized the goal I thought unattainable.

Thank you so much for your inspiration, I will remember your fortitude for the rest of my life. Rest in peace.

My friend Cath and I met Robert Mondavi in Burma 4 or 5 years ago on what was to be a trip up the Irrawadi. Unfortunately the river was silted up and we were stuck on the boat for 4 days with nowhere to go! What made my trip in particularly was meeting Robert and his lovely wife they were so enchanting. My friend and I could not believe his energy walking around the many amazing places in the fierce heat. We left at the airport and felt we had left a friend behind. God bless you - so may memories

In 2004, my husband, myself and my parents had the honour of meeting Mr. Robert Mondavi and his lovely wife Margrit during the summer of his 90th birthday. We will always remember his kindness and warmth that beautiful afternoon. His generous spirit was as apparent then and it will continue to live on in beautiful Napa. Mr. Mondavi and his family have touched all our lives, from his beautiful vineyards, to the vineyards and winemakers he has influenced to the beautiful mix of wine culture and art of Copia. We look forward to continuing to experience the beauty of Napa every year, but we will miss him dearly.
Our thoughts and prayers are with his family. May each passing day make his loss a little easier and his lovely memories stronger.
Sincerely,

I'm so sorry for your loss. I came across this notice of passing as I was researching tours of the winery. You see, my husband died February 11 of this year after 26 years of marriage and three teenaged children. My husband and I had happened upon the winery about five years ago while visiting Napa Valley from our home in Kingwood, TX. It was the only winery open on that day of the week--perhaps Sunday or Monday?--and the only one still open at five o'clock in the afternoon. We pulled into the parking lot and barely made it for the last tour of the day. It was a beautiful setting. As I recall, we started out in a sort of art gallery and then progressed into the vineyards followed by a tasting room. Anyway, I am planning a trip in July with our children to see show them a beautiful place and--for me--to recall a wonderful time with my husband. Thank you for the memories and here's to a memorable visit for us. Again, my condolences.

I just read on the website of Robert's passing.

Though I am only patron of the winery and the fine wine, I am saddened by the news. My family has often enjoyed the tour and grounds of the beautiful winery. It is a favorite to bring our Norwegian and other out of area family. Margrit has been our guide on two occasions and treated us very graciously even to the extent of hosting us a fine bottle of Cabernet Savignon. What a wonderful contribution he and his family have made to our region.

I did not him personally, but in our hearts this Bay Area icon will be missed. Our condolences to all family and staff.

I was 21 when I bought my first bottle of wine,...living with my grandmother in Waimanalo, Oahu. On my way home from a long day at school (UH) and work, I stopped by Safeway to buy a bottle of Woodbridge White Zinfandel, some grapes (red & green), brie, and crackers. Although I was working as a bus station stocker & runner at John Dominis restaurant, I knew absolutely nothing about wine. I was blown away. My eyes and palate became to open to the world of wine,....I began to learn how to enjoy the tastes of foods, and the endless combinations of pairings. And as I sat on my grandmother's living room floor at a little past midnight, propped up with couch cushions, watching "The King and I" for the first time, I was introduced to so much more. I began to understand the necessary balance between hard work and peaceful unwind. It was in that moment I started to understand life. Thank you Mr. Mondavi. I never knew you, but I've benefited from your life's work in ways many in this world will struggle to understand. I wish I could have known you.

Even though I am a novice wine taster, I will learn to aquire the taste. I respect him because of his great accomplishments, to grow and bring great wine to everyone. My father speaks highly of his wine. I always treasure each visit. I am actually planning a trip this weekend to bring my friends up there to visit and I am saddened to hear about his death.   I met Mr. Mondavi when I was working as a host at Stars Oakville cafe in 1996. There was a picture on the wall of him wearing a dinner jacket made of corks. I asked him about it and he recalled a cute story about a kid who saw the picture and remarked," Hey why is that guy wearing a bunch of beer cans ? " We both had a laugh, and I realized how down to earth and heartwarming this man is.

Vintner's Repose: In memory of Robert Mondavi

This grateful moment
of dignity
To pause and reflect
Life grand
and expansive
Autonomous

Creating the future
each day
as we say it will be

The warmth of
sunrise
and amber days

Fragrant with freedom
Fulfilled

Our home in
earth's bounty
sweet Napa

The sunset beckons
The wind rustling
To settle the day

Caring and faith
beyond reason or knowing
Oh how you soothe
generous Nature
of enduring strength

Elation - anticipation
Enchanting tamed grape
Rousing the kinship
and grace of man

We salute his

His heart hands

Now our hope

Bob Mondavi was not only an inspiration - a master of the "big picture" - but he was unfailingly supportive and attentive to the "little guys", too. When I was new in the wine business, he and Margrit always made time to encourage and mentor - and of course, take advantage of every opportunity to have fun!   Robert was always a generous and caring man to those who expressed an interest in wine. I remember our lunch with Robert and Margrit that we won by a "casual" wave of a paddle at the NVWA. He came over to give me a hug and I had my paddle in my hand. As I wrapped my arms around this great man, my paddle waved in the air and Ursula grounded the gavel and said that I had "won" the bid. Robert was so caring; he said I am so sorry and I will split this with you. I said "Are you kidding?" We loved the lunch and the forever relationship that ensued with this great man. We will miss him but his presence will never be lost in a great event that he created.

One of my greatest pleasures in life has been the opportunity and privilege to know Bob Mondavi. Over the years we worked, traveled and shared ideas and wine freely . . . just as he did with so many of my generation. Our industry has many pioneers but far too few true visionaries . . . Bob Mondavi was both. When I heard of his passing I chose to smile thinking of all his marvelous contributions and the inspiration that he had been to me . . . but now his memory brings tears to my eyes. So I guess I'll just raise a glass of Reserve Cabernet in his memory. God Bless Bob!

We fell in love with a bottle of wine (cabernet sauvigon reserve)
then when by chance we got a glimps of Mr. Mondavi at an event
we just had to shake his hand and give him a kiss for his wonderful wine and for him and his wife Margit generousity with the community they live in. Then we fell in love with the man. We celebrate with a bottle of Robert Mondavi Cabernet sauvigon every little thing no matter how small. Our family has grown up around this wine on the table. It has always brought out the best stories and truths at our dining room table. We will remember the man in our house always. When we give a gift it is always a bottle of the Mondavi Fume Blanc or Cabernet Sauvignon. I only wish we would have hung on to some of that 2004. We will miss your presence in our community here in the Napa Valley, thank you for the mark you made in our spirit and in our world.

I certainly knew Bob, but I had no occasion to develop a personal relationship with him. What I do remember was at a Napa Valley Vintners' meeting, if not in 1988 when I was president, then within a year or two thereafter, Bob pitched the idea of a center for food and wine, to be based in the City of Napa. The center was not a revolutionary concept, but the location certainly was. Bob, ever the visionary, saw long before the rest of us that the wine industry had to move south and engage and encompass Napa proper.

I remember running into Bob and Margarit briefly while waiting for the valet and our cars after an Oakville Growers tasting at Opus One. Bob was ahead of us but graciously let us hand our ticket to the Valet first. Funny though how their car came first ahead of ours anyway. He opened the door for Margarit ahead of the Valet and asked me how I liked our Honda. I told him I'd trade him straight across for his beautiful car and he told me that we were so much better off with the better gas mileage.
He shook my hand and said "You two have a wonderful evening! " You would have never known he was royalty!
The most memorable and wonderful bottle of wine I ever had was an 1985 Robert Mondavi Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon..
He is already missed.

I offer my sincere condolences to the Mondavi family and to the world as well - a good and honest man has passed from our lives.

I first met Mr. Mondavi, in line at the DMV office in Napa - I was surprised that so great a man would be standing there, carrying on a conversation with me, just plain folks talking about the weather and why we were there.

That's how I will remember Mr. Mondavi - just plain folk but a man that changed the world as we know it!

In the mid 80's I had the pleasure to meet Mr Mondavi in during a tasting and diner at Rest La Brochette/Mac Cave. The passion and enthusiasm that Mr Modavi showed for his work and his wines have inspired me in my work and in the creation of my own products.

The heavenly wines yards will now make even better wines

As executive assistant to Jim Edmund, Price Waterhouse, SF (the Mondavi Accountants), I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Mondavi and his family on numerous occasions, including an invitation to one of his special dinners among the vines at the Mondavi Estate. A very memorable evening indeed. Mr. Mondavi truly was a special person and a great philanthropist. He will be missed. My condolences to the family.

My first sip of wine was a glass of Robert Mondavi Cabernet Sauvignon 2003 - I still remember the very special moment. It was the beginning of my passion for wine. 6 years later I did quit my job and went to Australia to study winemaking.

Robert Mondavi was my mentor, he has always said "Drink what you like and like what you drink" I have taken that another step further:

"Do what you love and love what you do"

with his passion for life, love and making great wines to share with great people, it is this connection that will always make me smile when his name is mentioned, that every time someone talks about the love of wine, I will remember his passion for life. Robert Mondavi was not only my mentor, but a great contributor to our lifestyle, our business and our souls to do good in the world, one person at a time.

In 1981, I was a young graduate from the pomology department of the University of New Hampshire. I was intersted in learning to make wine and came to Napa Valley in order to learn the tricks. Robert Mondavi gave me my first job, and kindled the passion which has led me to a life-long career in this industry.

As a 19 year employee of Robert Mondavi Winery, and with many years of involvement in the wine business, I can say that Robert's vision is still capable of moving the world of wine. Last night I did a wine club event in Owatonna, Minnesota. 35 consumers that are living the vision that Robert preached. We talked of balance, the earth, wine and food and that we can all find a commenality when we enjoy a good wine. Robert created ambassadors of wine and food in all of the people he touched. We need more people like Bob Mondavi to offset the corporate culture that makes wines to a recipe, or follows a fad that a "wine guru", who has never made wine, proclaims as the peak of wine quality. Robert always said "wine should be as soft as a baby's bottom" and that it should be "as firm as an iron fist, wrapped in velvet". Tomorrow we may see the next Robert Mondavi come not from Minnesota or Napa Valley but from other "new world" wine areas, or maybe even from India or China. The world of wine needs have a new "Robert Mondavi" every so often to help continue the vision that Mr. Robert G.Mondavi so graciously and forcefully defined.

The first bottle of my wine was a Mondavi, and then I entered this wine world. On acknowledge of this news, I feel empty. I have reserved a bottle of his 2003 in my cellar, and I had been planning to recall my memory of the encounter 7 years ago. But today, on my birthday, on acknowledge of the obituary, I will open this wine. I'd like to say thank you. Robert, thanks a lot. We love you.

When I moved to the Valley from the Bay Area eight years ago the only thing I associated with the Valley was Wineries, and Mondavi was at the top of the list. I realized he meant much more to the community than a Vintner. Although I had never met Mr. Mondavi I would often feel his presence when I saw his accomplishments in making the Valley a better place to live. We are very grateful to the Man.

Just a quick email message to Mr. Mondavi's family at this sad time.

I discovered the wonderful wine that is made by yourselves, whilst working as a graduate trainee manager for the Majestic wine company in England.

It was not just the wine that totally blew my mind, but the whole philosophy, the enjoyment, the food and the jazz.

Thank you for making life so interesting, and providing inspiration for youngsters like myself to appreciate the good things in life!

His fame was well known through out the far corners of the entire world including the remote islands of the Kingdom of Thailand. His obituary was reported in the local Thai language newspaper as well. His pioneering spirit was inspirational to all the new world winemakers, even in Thailand. Not only did he make fortunes for people in Napa Valley, but he also uplifted livelihood of many small farmers and wine traders through out the world. We all join you in our prayers and may this somewhat ease the pain for the personal loss to the Mondavi family, and help them find solace in this difficult time.

My very first red wine of significance was a Robert Mondavi Cabernet Sauvignon in 1984. Tasting it changed my life, was responsible for me taking a job that moved me to Southern CA, and started my journey into the wonderful world of wine. I don't know many people of my generation that he didn't manage to touch in some way, whether they met him or not. I don't think I will ever drink a glass of wine again without thinking of him, his drive, and his determination to open up the wine world to as many people as possible. My heart goes out to the members of his family.

Robert Mondavi was the "rock star" of the wine industry and I couldn't believe it when I landed a job with the Robert Mondavi winery. I kept waiting for the other shoe to fall off. When I finally got to meet him in person at our sales meeting in Napa, I stuttered like a smitten groupie: "Mr. Mondavi, it's such an honor to work for you." He shook my hand, insisted on a kiss on the cheek and said, "Call me Bob."

The thing that really impressed me over the next 15 years was that so many talented people who worked at Robert Mondavi felt the same way that I did - that it was an honor to work for him. My sister-in-law who worked for Gallo called us "Mondavi Moonies"! But hey, people were lined up to join his crusade for the good life, which to him meant so much more than living a life of luxury. He would say things like, "America needs to be known for something besides guns and war. We need to show the world the best side of ourselves and we can do that over a good bottle of wine...from California!"

How could you not be inspired by his story, by his passion, by his generosity? Bob, it was an honor to work for you.

  Dearest Margrit
I send you my sincere condolences….because even though you and Bob were blessed with many wonderful years together, and he certainly lived every moment of his 94 years to the full, I know you will miss him terribly. He was very special. Unique. One of a kind in every way.
It was because of Bob's inspiration that I decided to learn more about wine and became a wine writer in Hong Kong where I have lived for the past 25 years. In fact, my second book, In Vino Prosperitas, New World Wine, which he told me he has in his library, has an entire chapter on him.
I visited Napa Valley many times over the years and enjoyed his company on every occasion. The auctions, which he started, and which I attended seven times, were certainly the greatest wine events in the world from every aspect.
I was especially glad to be able to be there for his 90th birthday dinner. But when I arrived at the dinner in “festive dress” as requested, (see attached photo) I found I was the only one to do so. Nevertheless, you made me feel right at home and even borrowed my pink wig. Bob tooted the little horn we gave him all night. And it was a most memorable evening for me, too.

You were a marvelous couple and even though Bob won’t be with you in body, his amazing spirit will never leave. And instead of being sad that he died, I will be grateful that he lived.

I send love and wish you the strength to be there for Bob.

My wife and I were privileged to meet Mr. Mondavi (along with Margrit) at the winery several years ago. We were having lunch as part of a tour and they walked across the private dining room where we were. They were not too busy to stop and shake hands and let us take pictures with them. They were very warm and gracious. The America, California and Napa wine communities owe Mr. Mondavi a huge debt for what he did to increase prestige, visibility and quality of Napa and California wines. He also gave back. We were at the opening of Copia when he and Julia Child hosted it. It wouldn't have happened except for his vision and committment. The wine world has lost a great man!

I moved to Napa 5 years ago from the bay area. When I told my friends and family where I was going, they all said "ooooh, Napa is nice!" and they all began saying how lucky I was.

I like to think that Mr. Mondavi is directly responsible for this. He has shared the beauty of this valley in each glass of his world famous wine, and in the process made Napa Valley world famous.

There are few people who are able to leave a lasting footprint in this world when they leave. Even more so, there are even fewer of those who make that footprint a positive one. It is easy to see Mr. Mondavi loved wine and saw all the avenues that winemaking could open for the human spirit. I thank him for sharing that vision with the world, and giving each of us the oppertunity to be a part of something much more fulfilling.

I am reminded of the splendor that is Napa Valley with each season, and I am greatful for the oppertunity to be one of the lucky few that Napa Valley home. But more importantly, I am amazed, moved, and in awe of this man who made the decision early on to dedicate his entire life to others. May he rest in peace, and may all that enjoy this spot in the world today, and for the many years to come - remember to raise their glass to the man who loved it enough to share it with the world.

We had the pleasure of meeting Robert Mondavi and his lovely wife in November of 1994 in Maui where we had just gotten married. We attended a wonderful winemakers dinner hosted by the Mondavi's at a country club. Robert was so gracious and charming. He sat with us part of the evening. We had a great time and good food and of course great wine. It was one of the most memorable evening of our lives. This is a memory we will always cherish.

Remembering a California Icon on a more personal note.

Robert's father Cesare and my great-grandfather Nazzareno were friends from the small town of Sassoferrato in Le Marche, Italy and immigrated together to the U.S. in the early 1900's, working the iron-ore mines in Minnesota and Michigan before making their way to California.

On a day in December 1999, Robert , Margrit, my wife Christine and me had the incredible occasion to talk of our common family history over lunch at his namesake winery.

A cherished memory. Salute!

Sunset Magazine and wine editor Sara Schneider remember a great vintner who shared our vision.

Last Friday, California wine lost the most important voice it’s had over the last half-century, and Sunset lost a passionate advocate for causes we share.
Robert Mondavi—who founded the first major California winery after the repeal of Prohibition and spent the rest of his life as an ad hoc (sometimes very) ambassador for Golden State wines throughout the world—died. He was 94.

The Sunset connection

Mondavi had two main messages, which parallel our mission here at Sunset rather remarkably: first, that California wine can be as good as any in the world—a lonely thought when he first expressed it, but disputed by few today. And second, that wine belongs in the context of a lifestyle; it’s meant to be shared with family and friends, with a lot of good food alongside. (Well, most people might see it the other way around on that last front, but I think Mondavi had it right.)

Sunset is a similar voice in the West. We celebrate the world-class products and experiences that our part of the country offers, and, like Mondavi, for us eating and drinking well is a lifestyle. The connection runs even to a shared architect. Sunset lore has it that on first seeing our headquarters in Menlo Park, designed by the legendary Cliff May, Mondavi reportedly decided on the spot that his namesake winery needed the same hand. So our sister buildings share the Mission heritage that Cliff May drew on, as well as the gracious, hospitible, indoor-outdoor spaces core to the values of both companies.

On a personal note

I met Robert Mondavi enough times to claim the right to call him “Bob” in Napa circles, if not enough for my name to register on his well-peopled radar. Yet sitting across from him at dinner in the winery’s Vintage Room or shaking hands at any one of the Valley events that he and his wife Margrit were so willing to throw their considerable weight behind, I never got less than a passionate thought about whatever was at the top of his mind on wine, food, and what we should all be doing about them. For Bob Mondavi was a man who shared—not only his resources but himself.

We at Sunset thank Margrit, as well as Michael, Marsha, and Tim—Mr. Mondavi’s children—for sharing him with us. We mourn his loss with you, but we also celebrate the life and ongoing vision of a giant of a vintner and man.

I will always remember Robert Mondavi’s passionate mantra "We can make wines equal to the best in the world". His unfailing belief that wine, food, and art were synergistic and this was something Napa Valley Vintners could create and achieve made us, as youthful vintners, believe in ourselves and our capabilities to compete with the world's best wineries. The recognition of Napa Valley that this achieved helped in developing the philanthropic efforts that are so well recognized and appreciated today. He was a true visionary that passed his vision to succeeding generations – he will be missed.

For a brief time, our family lived with Rosa Mondavi on Charles Krug while our home was being built and before we rented another house in St. Helena. I was just a child of 6, and I remember spending hours roaming the vinyards and winery, visiting Peter and Blanche, picking olives and climbing the oaks. My favorite memory is of the 3-wheeled bicycle Peter and Robert had bought their mother to ride downtown to do her daily grocery shopping in. It had a large basket in the back- perfect for my dog and "treasures", a bell that rang loudly, and was very stable whipping around corners at high speed, due to the tricycle design. I think I put 100,000 miles on that bike! I remember thinking how much Robert and Peter must have loved their mother to have bought her such a marvelous gift. If I were throwing a tantrum with my own family, I would threaten to run off to Robert and live with him, because surely a man who would treat his mother so nicely, would also understand and treat me well, too!

Over the years, I have let time and distance grow between me and my friends, and now, I regret those choices, while I savor the memories.

I've been 30 years in the food & bev business, Mr Mondavi's wines have graced many lists. I can't help to think of how many other wines would not be on those lists if not for him.
With the tens of thousands of barrels he produced, I imagine all the "angels" who have received their "shares" over the years, now sharing back.....

I never had the great opportunity to meet Mr. Mondavi. It was something I had hoped, wished, and dreamed to have gotten to do. He will truly be missed but, his love of Napa and of wine along with his passion, will never be forgotten. You can not judge one's life by the number of possessions they have, but by the legacy they leave behind. Oh what a wonderful life! Thank you for sharing it with all of us!

When I was 18, my father let me have a glass of wine (a Mondavi cabernet) with dinner one night. That was in 1968 I believe, and it was the beginning of a life long love affair with California reds. I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Mondavi once, not at a fancy auction, or a celebrity event, but pumping gas into his black Cadillac in Yountville back about ten years or so. He was so nice, and eager to talk with me for 10 or 15 minutes about what he was planning to do using new technologies, and satellite imagery to look down at the land to help make his wines better. Even then, he was looking for ways to improve on the status quo. I was very impressed with that. He even let the gas station attendant take a picture of us, which now resides in my wine cellar. I send my sincere condolences to all of his family in the sad time. I am very proud to say that I met him.

He was the absolute visionary for Napa and California. The lifestyle, the wines, the foods, the charities, he made it all happen. He had the spirit to make us think this was the best
place on earth. Of course he was right, and we will always think of him when we hear the word-Napa.

My earliest memory of "Uncle Bob" was the Mondavi Christmas parties where he would dress up as Santa and hire puppeteers to entertain the children of Mondavi employees. Every once in a while, I would see him at Mondavi when I went to visit my parents and he always remembered my name. He also bought girl scout cookies from me every year.

Two years ago, I ran the Nike Women's Marathon as part of Team in Training and to benefit Leukemia and Lymphoma research and treatment. The Mondavis (Tim, Robert and Margrit) contributed a combined $750 to my cause. They were always very generous.

My sister, Juliana, was sponsored by the Mondavis to attend a one week jazz workshop when she was in high school and that helped her cement her passion for playing the double-bass and for jazz music.

The Mondavis were much more like family to us, then just my parents' employers (for a combined 57 years). Although it was harder as the winery expanded, they still managed to make us feel like part of the Mondavi family.

Uncle Bob will be greatly missed.

For the first story I ever wrote about wine, I travelled to the Napa Valley. The only time that Robert Mondavi had available in his already overfull schedule was breakfast and he got up early and ate breakfast with me, so we could talk. After that, every time I saw him, he remained as passionate about the subject as ever and as generous with his time. He was indeed a great ambassador for Napa and for the joy of wine and food.

Heartfelt condolences to all the Mondavi family.

I grew up In Napa. My parents moved there in 1963. Robert Mondavi was an icon of the valley. As a child as you know wine was not a interest. I went in the Air Force at age 19 and left Napa but Napa never left my heart. For several years as GI, and money was tight, on my birthday I would buy a bottle of Robert Mondavi Cab Sav. I would look forward to and I must admit, I would finish the whole bottle myself. Now at age 47, my wife and I live on the central coast of California in the Santa Barbara wine country and become avid lovers and collectors of wine. In May 1007 my wife and I went back to Napa to experience the great wines of Napa Valley. We stopped at Opus One and tasted their wine. Which was the best of the trip. Robert Mondavi created his dream there and to taste Opus one, he accomplished everything he set out to do. Tonight I will pour a Napa wine and toast one of the founding fathers of Napa Valley. He will be truly missed

My first knowledge of Robert Mondavi Winery was in 1978 in Cleveland, Ohio. I worked at a restaurant called The Greenhouse and our uniforms featured a T-shirt with the RMW Oakville label on the front!

My husband and I both worked for RMW, I only for one year in 1982, and he from 1982-1993. Those were heady days, working for RMW. You felt you were on the zeitgeist of a new era in which an exciting, ground-breaking business was being born. Maybe the equivalent of working for Google today? Robert Mondavi was truly the fuel behind that fire.

Robert Mondavi was a mentor and role model for nearly everyone we knew and know in the wine business. His boundless generosity, energy and enthusiasm was, and will always remain, an inspiration for all of us. And his leadership and reputation spread the world over. We were privileged to have been included on a RMW company trip to France and Italy in 1987 with Robert. Everywhere we went, he was welcomed as the innovator and leader that he was – at the wineries and restaurants we went to in Italy especially, he was welcomed as a native son, a conquering hero.

Many, many memories... Our family will always be grateful for the many friends that we made, and the wonderful opportunities, fun events, and happy meals that we were able to be a part of because of Robert, his family, and RMW. We will think of him with heartfelt fondness always, and sincere condolences to all of Robert’s family.

Thank you, Bob! We will miss you!

I was 24 when I first started trying out wine and it wasn't long before my passion for wine began to bloom. One of the first really good wines I tasted was a Robert Mondavi wine and in large part this led me on the journey to discover all that is wonderful about the world of wine. I dare say that most people, from casual wine drinker to the most passionate of oenophiles, know who Robert Mondavi is and likely has enjoyed one of is wines at some point in time. What a legacy and gift he has left.

I say all of this because it is fair to say that my love of wine was first inspired by Mondavi and as a result I am truly saddened at his passing. I didn't know him, never met him and have no idea what kind of man he was personally. The closest I have come to him is that we share the same birthday, June 18th. However, I feel inextricably linked to him through his wine and the wines I eventually discovered as a result. I also connect with him because it was his wine that first sparked my interest. I think that is part of the wonder and magic of this elixir. It connects people, places and events in such a unique and intriguing way as to be almost unexplainable. It may seem strange that a perishable item can have that sort of effect but I am sure my sentiment is not lost on this group.

Somehow wine made me feel as though I knew Robert Mondavi. Strange, I know. But so true.

Farewell Mr. Mondavi.

Thank you for opening the door that led me to many vineyards and so many wines!

Robert Mondavi and I had a great business and personal relationship. It first started when he opened his first winery. He contacted me when I was managing the Century Plaza Hotel in West Los Angeles, and asked if we would sample his wines. We did and chose to feature them at the hotel. Of course, he had to promise to guarantee availability of the wines at a fair price. Thus began a thriving partnership.
On the personal side ~~ my family and I would travel periodically to the Napa Valley. Each time upon arrival at the winery he would take off with my daughter & son and show them around the winery and valley. My wife and I were treated like family, meeting for long lunches at his home in the Krug compound with his wife, Marjorie. After numerous bottles of his choice of wine, we were ready for a nap.
I'll remember our friendship forever. My deepest sympathy to all the family.

We are so very saddened by the death of Robert Mondavi. I first became aware of Robert and the 'winery' in 1976 when I visited Napa Valley following a business trip to San Francisco. Since that time I have been ardent supporter of Mondavi wines. The quote from Robert in his book, "Wine to me is passion. It's family and friends. It's warmth of heart......" are truly words to live by. May Gods blessings be with Robert and his family and may the angels welcome him to paradise!

The death of Robert Mondavi is the end of an era and it is likely that we will never again have someone influence wine and food as much as he did. Without question he changed the way America drank and ate and how we were perceived by the rest of the world. I had the pleasure and privilege of working for Mr. Mondavi for 25 years. I visited nearly every state and every continent with him or on his behalf. It did not matter if you were in the finest restaurant in Paris or in the most humble of vineyards in Serbia, everyone associated with food and wine respected the contributions of Robert Mondavi. I have often said that there are only two types of people in the wine industry those that worked for Robert Mondavi and those that wish they had. I join them all in a toast and a thank you to Robert Mondavi.

Only 2 weeks ago my girlfriend and I enjoyed our tours of Mr. Mondavi's vineyards and winery; 2 weeks later we heard of his passing, and at the outset all we could do was pop open a bottle we bought there and toast to his memory over Italian dinner.

His essence shall live on in every bottle from his winery and grace every table where his wine is poured, just as he graced Napa Valley, and thus he shall always be present , as the American Bacchus, around those who would love him when they're at their finest: enjoying a bottle of fine wine.

Forever live on the icon of Napa Valley and American wine.

I spent 6 years as Executive Chef for Robert Mondavi in Southern California. From the first moment I stepped into the Robert Mondavi Wine and Food Center to the Winery in Napa the spirit of Mr. Mondavi was in everyone and was everywhere. He taught me to keep it simple, but to make it the best. That wine is not just for special occasions, but it was a meal time beverage to served in the company of good food, good friends and family. He offered me the opportunity to travel to places I could have only dreamed of and to cook with the worlds best chefs. The relationships and people I have met being an ambassador of Robert Mondavi are a gift from Mr. Mondavi that will last a lifetime. I was blessed to have the opportunity a couple of weeks to cook one more meal for Mr. Mondavi at his home. His vision and genorsity has enriched my life in ways that will take my lifetime to fully appreicated. Thank you Mr. Mondavi. or as he would say "just call me Bob"

Robert Mondavi's contributions to the appreciation of wine in America will never be forgotten. His indomitable spirit, tireless teaching, and passion for wine has catapulted American wines in general, and Napa wines specifically, to the forefront of the world's attention. This journey began with the Judgment of Paris, but it was Robert's Mission that completed the journey and brought us to the point where Americans now praise wine, and the world now praises American wine.

The first California wine I remember drinking was Robert Mondavi Reserve Chardonnay 1995. It was in Burgundy, I had just finished high school and, next to a 1995 Corton Charlemagne, the wine had nothing to be ashamed of.
I remember the look of surprise on my mentor, Mr. Michel Juillot of Mercurey,'s face when we revealed the bottle. "Oh, they make some pretty decent wines over there in California!"
Now, I work in the Napa Valley and I am always proud to bring the local wines home to France.

For helping found some of the best wine-producing regions in the world and for your inspiring dedication, I raise my glass to you, Mr. Mondavi.

I am so grateful for Robert's contribution (a huge understatement) to the art of winemaking in America and for his great wines. Wine is not just a drink. It joins us to the earth and to the honest labor of man and to man's creative spirit and is best enjoyed in the company of friends and family. We always toast our mom (mother of 10) on Mother's Day with RM pinot noir, her favorite, and we did so 5 days before his death. Thanks for helping us and millions of people all over the earth celebrate together the great occasions of their lives--and the small events too--with the living drink of wine.

I remember being introduced to the world of fine wine by a friend, a bit before my 21st birthday. Upon trying the Robert Mondavi Fume Blanc, I felt I needed to remember this wine because it was so delicious. That moment etched the "arch & tower" in my brain for good. A few years later I visited Napa Valley briefly and the only place we had time to see was Robert Mondavi Winery and I thought "What a dream it would be to live in this valley and work here." About 7 years later I found myself doing exactly that, thanks to the inspiration and support of one Robert G. Mondavi. His passion has inspired me throughout my career in wine and I am so grateful for having had Robert & Margrit in my life. His passing is sad, but when you consider the number of lives he has touched, and the influence he has had, you can only be happy if you were lucky enough to be within his circle of influence and remember his warm handshake, genuine smile and always, a kiss for the ladies. Mr., you leave this earth with the love of many, and you allow us all to believe that wherever you are, you are living the good life with fine wine, good food, family and friends.   One of the things that make the Napa Valley extraordinary is the spirit of community that was developed years ago by Robert Mondavi and fellow vintners of the pioneer years. For that, and along with many other generous gifts he started and cultivated, we will thank and always remember him. He certainly enjoyed life, and hopefully we can all apply that spirit.

Bob Mondavi is simply THE man who put California on the world wine map. I worked for Mondavi (on the Opus One side) briefly for a couple years in the 1990's as a consultant, and while that experience meant very little in the hisory of the Mondavi dynasty, it was a seminal period for me. What can you say about the leader of the new world, about a man who introduced himself with a smile and a welcome to everyone, including a cellar rat/ clumsy new sales guy just t rying to figure out the wine biz? I am, was, and will always be, in awe. Good bye, Mr. Mondavi.

As a food & wine producer for American Express, it was my job to create one-in-a-lifetime experiences for Platinum Card members. For out Napa Experience, the Mondavi winery was a big part of the weekend. One visit, Michael was slated to host a dinner followed by cigars on the top of Opus One. At the last minute, Michael was unable to attend the event causing my heart to stop. Minutes later, I recieved a call from Robert Mondavi asking if HE would be an acceptable substitute for Michael. Later that night, I had the honor of introducing our gracious host, Mr. Robert Mondavi. What a thrill for everyone.

When I worked at Skyhill Napa Valley, I helped transport some of our off-line Nubian goats to temporary quarters at the Mondavi's home ranch, to feed on brush and weeds below the houses on the hill. Days later, a tree fell across the beautifully tight new wire fencing, and the goats, being goats, moved rapidly up the hill, to mack on the more inviting landscaping surrounding the houses. We had to rush down from the other side of the Valley, to round up the strays, much to the Mondavi's amusement. We could see them laughing as we leaped over their azaleas and whatever, providing some relief to a stressful and embarrassing situation.

Mr. Mondavi was an inspiration to the lives he graced through his passion and wine. Those of us lucky enough to have had the opportunity to share in his dream by working for him have great memories. My favorite quote of his is "If you love what you do, you will never have to work another day in your life.” I still love what I do, and I owe that you Mr. Mondavi.

In the mid 1980s, we began bringing Robert Mondavi wines to the Cayman Islands - the first Napa Valley wines to come to these shores. Our wine business was transformed and Robert's shadow has loomed large as California wines have grown here. Robert has been an inspiration to us all, and has given us many moments of pleasure. We salute you sir from these islands, and we send condolences to all the family.

Certainly no one has done more for the Napa Valley than Bob Mondavi. From his days at Charles Krug when he was constantly pushing to improve their wines, to the founding of his own winery, to his role as Napa's "ambassador extrorinare" for the last thirty years, he devoted his whole like to making and promoting great wines. We owe him a debt that simply cannot be repaid.

We honor him for his vision, his passion, and most of all his love of life. No one could be around Bob for more than five minutes without being swept up in his boundless enthusiasm.

We will miss you Bob.

Robert was a mentor, friend and visionary. He lead the winemaking industry of Napa and North America on a quest to compete with the best wines in the world. His vision extended to the creation of Copia: The America Center for Wine, Food, and the Arts which will be a lasting tribute to him in the years to come

I will be opening a wine shop in the next month. I do not have a traditional wine background so the last year has been a scramble to learn all about wine. And while i've known his name since I learned how to shop, I have come to know Mondavi did to wine what Ford did to cars. When the old world was stuck in their ways, he helped pave the way in Napa for vintners to experiment, modernize, be daring and make world class wines. And Mondavi himself was world class. God Bless.

Mr. Mondavi was incredible in many ways, but the one that comes most to my mind was as an inspiration for me and thousands of others whose lives he touched in one way or another. He was an inspiration not only as the great visionary for what wine could become in California and especially, the Napa Valley, but also for many less grand things. His generosity, his spirit of community, his persistence and undying desire to do better all inspired us. But perhaps most of all, his ability to make every person he met feel like they were the only one that mattered in the world at the time of their meeting inspires me to this day. Here's to you, Mr. Mondavi!!

The volunteer sommeliers were just raising their glasses in the back of house at the Wine Experience 2005 in New York City when in came Bob Mondavi and Margrit. Our toast poised, we jumped at the opportunity, promptly pouring them both a glass and raised our toast, which had initially been for ourselves, to the great wine leader. Bob always gave his time and blessings to anyone who expressed an interest in wine, no matter how busy he was. He was a tireless ambassador. Let us carry on his efforts so that he may rest peacefully.

Robert Mondavi changed our world! He brought the Napa Valley, along with it all the new world wine regions, to the forefront of the minds of wine lovers everywhere. He taught a generation to explore and consider the endless joys of food, wine and the arts. His exuberance, sharing vision and commitment to quality have inspired so many of us to reach a little further, dream a little farther and to make it a little better. It will be our responsibility to make sure future generations remember all the wonderful things that Bob brought to the table!

Many years ago when my then-boyfriend—whom I married—and I went wine tasting, we went to Robert Mondavi’s Winery and he was there as others were talking to him. Now I am living in Istanbul, Turkey and Robert Mondavi is one of the few American wines you can find here so that says a lot. I will never forget that day at his winery nor him!   As an employee of RMW from 1992-2005, I have many wonderful memories. My favorite is being included in an impromptu picnic with Mr. Mondavi, Margrit and a few other women from the Executive Office. We ate a simple but delicious meal prepared by Margrit, drank the lovely Fume Blanc and listened to travel stories & anecdotes from Bob & Margrit. My thought was that people would pay thousands of dollars at an auction for what I was experiencing right then. It was incredible.

Growing up in the wine industry in the Central Valley, I watched closely what was going on in Napa, specifically at Robert Mondavi's Winery. To me, it was the mecca, the place to be, because of the man. Years later, when I finally made it and was offered a job there, it was a dream come true. My time was short there, but he made an impact on me that will always be felt. He helped so many and taught us well, and it is a philosophy that I will adhere to as well. Thank you Robert. At the conclusion you broke everyone up when you placd ice cubes in your wine and said............if this is how you like to drink your wine then do it.
I have been in this business over 37 yrs and I will never forget that feeling you gave all of us that night, to be free and enjoy wine however we liked it.
Bless you & your family.......& may you now be at peace.

A man so imbued with the spirit of wine, yet so firmly rooted in the soils of Napa. Like a vine, he was tenacious, drawing to himself people and resources that he needed to grow. Then developing, pushing onward and outward. Until finally, and by some personal alchemy, delivering a harvest of love, and joy for all to enjoy. An inspiration to many, he will not be forgotten.

It was a bottle of 1997 Opus One, on the deck of my parent's home, that raised my eyebrows on how a great bottle of wine could turn a regular evening into a memorable experience. It was a beautiful September evening on Moon Mountain Drive in Sonoma, we ate outside and watched the sun go down...along with the Opus. Without that moment I probably would not be where I am today. And that deserves a thanks to the man.

Robert Mondavi
1913-2008

Ricardo Santos
Mayo, 2008

California I

Like many, I had been aware of him for years prior to his signing a copy of his 1998 autobiography "Harvests of Joy" for me. Reading the book, I feel that I got to know him well.

I can’t help but feel that if Mr. Mondavi had not placed California wine squarely on the world map, chances are there would not today be over 700 wine blogs, nor such a fine assortment of wines and winemaking styles across 50 American states. Certainly it would seem that his longevity was well-served by a life devoted to living well in the company of good wine.

Arrivederci, Signore. You left this world a better place.

The person who emulate me the most to join the family of wine is definitely Robert Mondavi. When I moved to the USA in 1982 from Europe, it is thanks to him that I was able to drink very good American wines.
Meeting him was always a great pleasure and I will never forget talking with him and his wife for more than an hour at the Paris airport on the way to Bordeaux. What a great chance I had to spend an intimate time with this wonderful man.
Thank you Robert for the great memories.

We will always thank Robert and his family for all they have done for our family over the past 37 years. Even though we are probably one of the smallest Robert Mondavi distributors in the U.S., Robert always welcomed us to his winery or home as if we were royalty. His enthusiasm was infectious. We were truly blessed to have been a friend of Robert. We'll miss him and will never forget him. Raise a glass of Cabernet Sauvignon tonight and every night in his memory.   In 1999, Mr. Mondavi graceously came to a home winemakers garage in Napa to taste a Garage d Vin, he inspired Vic Bourassa to "Get Into the Wine Business" . Bourassa Vineyards was born by the mentor of all mentors, he was sincere and generous with his praise and encouragement, then at 85 years old he still had that gleam in his eye talking wine.

Coming from the high-tech industry to the California wine business, one of the things that makes it so special is the open cooperation that is shared by all you meet. It is my belief that the stage set by Mr. Mondavi is solely responsible for this. He always believed that if California wines succeeded Mondavi would succeed. No one promoted California wines better or harder than Mr. Mondavi. He was and always will be the true pioneer of the California wine industry.

Every person I've ever talked to who is really into wine has had that "aha" moment, where a wine just grabs you, and the penny drops and you no longer see wine the same way. For me that came with two wines in the early nineties, the first of which was a bottle of Robert Mondavi Cabernet Sauvignon. Unfortunately I didn't pay attention to the vintage, vineyard or anything else, but I remember myself and the future Mrs. being handed the bottle by an Uncle at my Grandmother's 80th birthday party, who said "try this" and I vividly recall how amazing it was (and that we hogged the remainder of the bottle). At that point I had no idea where it was from, how much it cost, or even what the heck Cabernet Sauvignon was, but it got me interested to try and learn more. And I am still trying to this day!

My husband and I got engaged in Napa Valley 5 years ago. We were staying at Michael's guest house and touring the vineyards that week. We attended a concert at the Mondovi vineyard. My husband has been selling wine for years and Robert Mondovi is one of his idols. We were lucky enough to meet Mr. Mondovi at the concert and he was the first person we told of our engagement. He congratulated us and told my husband that the secret to a great marriage was to "Keep the passion." We have a framed photo of the three of us to remind us of the advice and the special day.

As a young boy growing up in the Napa Valley I saw first hand the Valley’s agricultural change from prune and walnut orchards to grapes. This was mainly due to the vision of early vintners like Mr. Mondavi who felt the Napa Valley could produce wines that could compete on the world stage. Well, as we all see today he was right. So I want to take this moment to say “Thank you Mr. Mondavi” for your vision that allows me to make world-class wines in a world-class place.

Having had the chance to taste, share a bottle and have a great conversation with Mr. Mondavi 15 years ago in Singapore, I always hoped that I would have had a chance to meet him again and tell him what a life long impression he had made on me.
He will be missed as the greatest embassador that our industry has had.

I am a mere annual visitor to The Valley. With family in the trade, I have been exposed to the greatness that is the Mondavi story. We are all in awe of his accomplishments and family contributions to the wine world. Imagine if he had never been able to convince his parents to move to California? Thank you Mr. Mondavi. Your risk was worth it!

Excellence is that which reminds you of no other. Robert Mondavi was the epitome of that phrase.
I have no doubt that I am in the wine industry because of what Mr. Mondavi believed in. He was just able to put it into words. And wine.
Thank you, sir. Thank you for everything.

Bob, I always admire your passion and love for not only wines but also for the world as well as people. You taught me so much. I often questioned myself if I could tell your thoughts correctly to the fans. Our deepest condolences to the family of Mr. Mondavi on behalf of all the Japanese fans.

Many years ago I was invited to a wine seminar here in Kona, Hawaii. Mr. Mondavi was the guest speaker at the tasting and we could discuss our impressions of some of his best reserve wines. I knew nothing about wines but I liked them. I asked Mr. Modavi many questions about what I detected in his wines. He took the time to validate my observations. For me, it was a defining
moment regarding my appreciation of wines. His "down to earth" attitude
was beyond anything I expected from a legend.

When I first meet Robert I called him Mr. Mondavi. He told me to call him Robert and gave me a glass of Cabernet and share his joy of the wine and you couldn't help but feel the passion in his voice. Robert, you are the reason I am in the industry today! You will be missed.

Bob was a friend. When he wrote his book, Harvest of Joy, he asked me if I thought I could make the cover photo. He said the big boys from New York wanted to do it but he told me I could do it as well as they could. We did it together. He claimed it was one of his favorites. I had dinner with him a few times. He talked about wine. And much more. He spoke of his travels and how different people and unfamiliar cultures taught him to expand his understanding, not about wine but about humanity. I don't think he ever stopped expanding.
He was loved by some many.

One can only hope to be the person Robert Mondavi was. So many times during our 2 visits to the Napa Valley, did we hear his name and always spoken with respect and admiration. His kindness and generosity will be sorely missed. Rest in peace Robert Mondavi...rest in peace.

As a server I always got a moment of pleasure every time I would serve a glass of Mondavi wine. It always made sense to me that when my guest would order it off of our wine list, they just had a good feeling about them. I had a good feeling as well. I had a real feeling, that I was serving something of good quality not only that, but of real passion. I always stand behind everything I sell at my restaurant. A bottle of Robert Mondavi wine was one of the many front lines of those good quality products.

Robert, you meant so much to so many, your legacy and warmth of heart will live on forever. My wife Lara and I had such a wonderful time visiting with you and toasting you at a Robert Mondavi vineyard concert series production back in July, 2006, while celebrating our 5th wedding anniversary. The wine club, the concert (Shawn Colvin/Brandy Carlyle), the beautiful weather, the beauty of the vineyard that night and your warm company were just awesome, and a memory we will always cherish! Thank you for the memory Robert! We will miss you.
